What is my skin made of?

Collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid… We all have already heard of those substances that are "good for our skin", and the source of its beauty. But do we really know what they are and what their purpose is?

Collagen proteins, situated in the dermis, are interlaced fibers forming a connective tissue. This collagen tissue ensures the firmness and density of our skin. It is also in charge of the “automatic” protection of our skin against daily shocks and frictions.

Just like collagen, elastin is a protein. However, elastin fibers, as you might expect, are responsible for the elasticity of your skin and for its suppleness. It also plays a role in its protection alongside with collagen.

Hyaluronic acid?

This scientific term actually refers to a molecule that is also situated in the dermis. Its greatest quality is that it retains the water. So it plays an important part in the hydration of the skin. Hyaluronic acid then maintains the density and thickness of our skin.

Associated with water, collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid are the 3 fundamentals of a beautiful healthy skin. They are present in the dermis… but let's not forget the role of the epidermis !

Situated on the surface of the skin, the epidermis is a natural barrier working both ways : it retains water (with the hydrolipidic film) and protects you against pathogens (f.i. bacteria) and prevent them from entering your body through your skin thanks to its permeability. We pay special attention to our face epidermis because it is our "reflection", it is the image we reflect to others.

All the substances composing our skin constantly renew themselves. However, with age, cells renew themselves less quickly, less efficiently… Protein production slows down, the epidermis and the dermis become thinner… The aging process begins.

A deep massage of your face can stimulate the production of those fundamental cells and substances that are present in the dermis. Concerning the epidermis, it is also stimulated by a more important blood circulation. Your skin complexion is clearer, you look less tired !
